Avoid Bad Seams in Commercial Carpet

On Ken’s annual visit to Utah’s Little America Hotel, he saw a really bad seam in a recently renovated carpet. Big mistake!

I’ve been going back and forth to Utah for many years. That’s where my wife’s family is. We always like to stay at the same hotel—the famous Little America.

Most recently, when I went this Thanksgiving I noticed that they redid the rooms.

Here’s the problem: Someone specified a very fine woven looped carpet for a commercial application. (They did at least put the seam under the bed, which hid some of the issue.)

But the fact of the matter is, there were two major problems. First, the seam probably wasn’t put together properly.

Second, if the maid goes in with a vacuum and a beater bar, they are likely to catch a loop or a thread. In that case, the whole thing is going to come apart—as you can see very clearly in the photos below.

Many of these looped carpets are beautiful. You may appreciate the design. But sometimes, it’s just the wrong application. When you’re doing a commercial space, beautiful is not always better.
