Sisal Carpet: It's Alive!

Don’t let your client’s sisal carpet crawl up the walls or rip out tack strips. Sisal should be glued to the floor or to a pad for wall-to-wall installations.

I want to talk to you about sisal. Over my 40-year flooring career, sisal has been popular almost the entire time. Designers, in particular, love it and never seem to tire of it.

There’s many reasons to choose sisal. It’s a green product that’s beautiful too. It always goes with everything in a room.

With all that out of the way, I encourage designers to remember one thing. Just like Frankenstein’s monster, IT’S ALIVE!!!

Sisal is an organic product. It absorbs moisture, it dries out. It expands and contracts—a lot.

That means sisal carpet is prone to ripping out tack strips or growing up the walls. (Seriously!)

As a rule of thumb, if you’re installing sisal wall to wall, you need to make sure to glue it down to the floor or to a pad. If you take that precaution, you shouldn’t have any problems.
