Lengthen the Life of Flat Woven Carpets

From vacuuming to cleaning stains, here's a quick look at how to take care of woven carpets. Full document below!

Recently, a customer asked me how she could properly take care of her flat woven wool rugs. I had my friends at Design Materials, Inc. send me their in-depth cleaning instructions.

These instructions are great for flat woven wool carpet, sisal carpet and other natural fibers. You can download the full document below, but there are a few points I want to focus on today.

First, for loop pile carpets, use plain suction or beater bar vacuums without brushes. Do not use the revolving brush as it may cause more pilling and fuzzing.

Second, when a carpet starts to look soiled, you can have it professionally dry cleaned. Preferably by someone familiar with dry cleaning systems such as Host or Capture.

Third, when spills occur, blot up liquids by applying pressure with white paper towels or a white cloth towel. Do not rub!

I can’t emphasize that last point enough. When you rub, you may get the stain out. But, if you rub that carpet, what you’re going to do is abrade the texture. The carpet is not going to look the same again.

I encourage you to take a look at the full instructions. Make a copy for yourself and keep them with you to give away to your clients. This document with tell you how to move forward with confidence when dealing with flat woven carpets.
