Today, I want to talk to you about putting patterned rugs on stairs with rounded steps or turns.
Here’s the good news. You can put any rug with a pattern, stripe or design on your client’s staircase. But you’ll need to remember a couple of important installation and selection tips.
First, it’s important to center the pattern on the main set of stairs. Then, once you’ve reached the turn on your stairs, you’ll want to keep the pattern symmetrical on the inside turn.
In other words, the math doesn’t work on stairs with curved steps—meaning the carpet pattern on the outside turn won’t be symmetrical. That’s okay. You’ll be able to keep the visual flow of the pattern by simply having it symmetrical on that inside turn.
In terms of pattern choice for stair carpet, I would recommend bringing some initial samples to your client’s home and laying them out on their stairs. At that point, you’ll be able to plan how much of the pattern you want to see on the step itself.
Some patterns will work really well on a wider staircase where you can see more of the design. Other patterns, such as stripes, could work for more narrow stairs. Just make sure you plan ahead so that you aren’t surprised on installation day!
