Designers: Look at One Box Before Committing to Hardwood

Want to make sure your client loves their new hardwood floor? Concerns with color/character variation and plank width need to be resolved BEFORE installation.

If you’ve got a client who is going to buy 800 sq.ft. of wood (or more) there’s something important to remember.

Today’s wood has lots of character and color variation. There are also lots of differences in terms of plank widths and other qualities. This is especially true of wide plank European white oak floors.

Therefore, I always recommend that your clients invest in a box before they make any buying decisions. Bring in the box and lay out all the planks on the floor.

Then, check for three things.

  1. Is there a lot of color variation and do you like the variation?
  2. Is there a lot of character variation? Is it too much character variation?
  3. Do you like the size of the boards and the way it is made?

It may be a couple hundred dollars to bring that box in. In our experience, it’s WELL worth the investment.
