Broken Tile? Here’s What to Do Next

If you can’t find a replacement tile of the same size, choose a smaller or thinner tile instead. You can always make up the difference with grout or mortar.

Handymen and plumbers will often break tiles that is either of a size or a color that you can’t get anymore.

If you have multiple cracked tiles, you could replace an entire wall (or part of a wall) with a new tile.

If you’re trying to just replace a few tiles, here are some guidelines.

1.) The new tile has to be smaller, not larger, than the tile you’re replacing. (We’re assuming that you can’t get a tile the exact same size.)

2.) The new tile has to be thinner, not thicker, than the tile you’re replacing.

In other words, you can always make up the difference with grout or mortar. But you can’t do anything with something that is either bigger or thicker because it just won’t fit!

I’m sure that this is a story that is familiar to you as a designer. You may not be able to find the same tile, but you can usually come up with a solution that works for everyone. Obviously, it’s better to come up with the solution in advance.
